Every spring, the Michelin Guide announces its updated list of the best restaurants in the UK – awarding one, two and three stars to restaurants across the country, as well as tipping its hat to excellent value places to eat and the chefs working towards becoming more eco-friendly restaurants. The Michelin Guide has its own share of issues – the guide has been slammed previously for favouring certain cuisines and displaying a lack of diversity across the chefs and teams awarded – but it remains one of the biggest British food moments of the year, with each annual list eagerly anticipated by chefs and foodies. As we wait for the 2023 list to be announced, here’s everything we know.

When will the 2023 UK Michelin stars be announced?

The 2023 UK guide will be announced on Monday 27 March at 6pm. It will be the first in-person Michelin event in the UK since the start of the pandemic and will also be streamed on YouTube. A few of the individual awards such as the Young Chef award and Opening of the Year are announced a couple of days before the official event.

How many restaurants in the UK have a Michelin star?

194 restaurants in the UK hold at least one Michelin star. There are 165 one-Michelin-star restaurants, 22 two-Michelin-star restaurants and just eight three-Michelin-star restaurants.

Which UK city has the most Michelin-star restaurants?

London has 82 Michelin stars across 66 restaurants. See our round-up of the best restaurants in London for our edit of the tables to book in the city.

2022 Michelin star UK winners

In 2022, 19 spots were awarded their first-ever star. London, perhaps unsurprisingly, won the bulk of the stars awarded – six restaurants received their first star including The Frog by Adam Handling and Kol, the Mexican 2021 opening from Santiago Lastra.

As well as the traditional one-, two- and three-star awards, Michelin tips its hat in a series of special awards. In 2022, the Young Chef award was scooped by not one but three young cooks – brothers Luke, Nathaniel and Theo Selby, who cook at Soho chef’s table Evelyn’s Table. Outside of London, Aberystwyth spot SY23 was hailed as Opening of the Year, while Gleneagles Maitre D Dale Dewsbury, of the hotel’s restaurant Andrew Fairlie, took home the Welcome and Service Award.
